LA AYUDA DEL LABORATORIO MÉDICO EN EL DIAGNÓSTICO CLÍNICO: EL ESTUDIO DE LA PERMEABILIDAD INTESTINAL THE HELP OF THE MEDICAL LABORATORY IN CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS: What is a study of intestinal permeability and what is it for?

What is a study of intestinal permeability and what is it for?

It is a very little annoying, minimally invasive test that is performed in the urine after oral ingestion using a controlled overload technique of two non-metabolizable substances: lactulose and mannitol

That allows us to know the proper functioning of the intestinal mucosa.

WHAT IS THE INTESTINE?

The intestine is a tube covered by a mucosa and with a dual function:

  1. – Digestion and absorption of nutrients (the food we eat once they have passed through the rest of the digestive tract (from the mouth to the stomach)
  2. Another, the less known, is which is to act as a barrier against toxic compounds and macromolecules: It is the first barrier against harmful or “potentially harmful” substances.

The intestine do this by keeping the intracellular junctions closed, preventing uncontrolled access of toxic substances, macromolecules and microorganisms into the body.

The intestine is one of the first defensive nonspecific defense barriers of our body.

It is in close contact with approximately 70% of the total cells that make up the immune system.

It is very easy to understand that if this barrier is altered (problems of intestinal permeability) substances that should not be presented,  to the immune system,   they are, and thus people may have problems of hypersensitivity (Intolerances and allergies)

The intestinal barrier may be altered by increased permeability, thus we may have many general health problems and problems of digestive disorders and above all we may encounter problems arising from intestinal infections by bacteria and fungi.

If on the contrary the intestinal permeability is diminished we can find that although we eat all the nutrients in the adequate amount, our body has a biological deficit of we cannot use them in the amount we need
